Postmodernism
Is a theory of society based around the view that society had changed economically/politically/socially its now characterised by social fragmentation people are now able to create their own identity.
Young Identified feature of pomo society
Much greater instability and insecurity.
Less consensus of moral values feels of anomie.
Emphasis on self interest.
Emotion and crime
Postmodernist break with the approach that why people commit crime and look for individual differences. They refer to the concept as incoherence they reject other theories for being too rational its emotions that cause crime and they are irrational and unscientific.
Levin and Mcdevitt
Argue that crime and deviance is the result of thrill seeking the reward of crimes is as much psychological than social, they escape the dullness of everyday life and experience feelings of self expression.
Doesn’t explain rational choices and non thrilling crimes.
Globalisation
This had led to crimes such as drug and human trafficking.
Fragmentation
Social behaviour is no longer shaped by traditional identities such as CAGE. People can now choose their identity and lifestyle. Crime can no longer be explained by metanarrative.
Consumerism
This is buying things for personal happiness TV shows such as cribs causes crime because of repression people can’t afford the things.
Bauman
Stated that in pomo the inability to satisfy material needs is dominated by consumerism, people resent society if they can’t satisfy their needs. Futhermore argued that repressed groups are more likely to be a victim of crime such as homeless people.
surveillance
New technology has made it easier, records of our lines such as bank/ college this monitors behaviour. Increse in CCTV over 300 times a day!
