What is Postmodernist view of Religion?
-Religion is no longer ‘traditional’ with rules you have to follow
-Religion is now more flexible and you are able to pick and choose which part of religion you can choose to believe
What does Lyon say about religion?
Lyon use e.g. of Jesus in Disney Land he describes how religion has become disembodied in postmodernism society: it’s no longer embedded in religious organisations,country or culture and beliefs are not embedded in their original contexts
What is Disembedding?
has allowed people to pick and mix lots of bits of belief systems:take what they like and reject what they don’t and it finds religion appearing in unexpected places e.g. as in the title in Disneyland.In this way religion becomes a matter of choice and should not be viewed in term of obligation but if consumption
What does Lyotard mean by religion is the monopoly of truth?
Many religions see themselves as the true representative of God and do not tolerate challenges from rivals
What does Lyon mean by religion is Spiritual Shoppers?
Religious leaders turn to the media to publicise their belief system, which has created a spiritual marketplace for people to move around religions to find which one suits their identity
What is New age Movement?
These focus on spirituality rather than devotion to God so are preferred in a postmodern society.
What is the reason religion is declining?
There has been a dramatic decline in religion as people become spiritual shoppers this is due to religions inability to change
What is Pick and Mix Culture?
People pick and mix beliefs and buy into, or reject, beliefs that most suit their lifestyle choices and the identity they want to project.
