postmodernism Flashcards
what is postmodernism?
believe that we are post (after) modernism
they argue that none of the big theories like marxism and functionalism, which tried to solve society’s problems, have worked
society is much more ‘fluid’ and is characterised by choice, freedom and diversity
what is the postmodern view of the family?
In postmodern society there is no longer one typical type of family such as the nuclear family, rather there is huge diversity of family types and it is no longer possible to make general theories about the role of the family in society like the Functionalists and Marxists have done in the past.
giddens - plastic sexuality

evaluation of giddens - jamieson
beck and beck-gernsheim
stacey
There is no longer a dominant family type as family forms have become so diverse. We need to accept this and not force people to live in ‘conventional families’ as this will cause misery.
stacey - gay and lesbian families
children raised in gay and lesbian families are less likely to be hostile to homosexual relationships
discourages intolerance of families who are different, which is essential in a postmodern world
allows people more freedom to develop their sexuality
fitzgerald
found that relationship between parent and child is more imporant than parent’s sexuality
