Postmodernism Flashcards
PM does not accept that there is a metanarrative
Barriers like CAGE no longer exist
Reject functionalist, new right, marxist and all other attempts to impose a single explanation of the functions of education.
Now diversity in education- faith and specialist schools
Economy has changed
No longer producing workers for an assembly line role
The economy we have today needs active and creative workers not passive and docile as marxists suggest
Thompson
Argues in a PM society, schools can break free from the oppressive uniformity of the old centralised one size fits all system where all schools are expected to be the same
He argues that education becomes customised to meet the needs of diverse communities, the growth of faith schools and specialist schools ect
How has education changed to reflect postmodern society?
- education is diverse and customised to individual learners needs
- education is controlled locally by communities
- learning is flexible eg distance learning
- lifelong learning, individuals update their skills in response to changes in the economy
- the learner is active and learns through their own experience
