Q

EXTERNAL JUGULAR VEIN

A

FORMATION-union of posterior auricular vein and posterior division of retromandibular vein.
COURSE-lower part of the parotid gland crosses sternocleidomastoid and pierces roof of posterior triangle and drains into subclavian vein.
TRIBUTARIES-
1. Posterior external jugular vein
2. transverse cervical vein
3.suprascapular vein
4.anterior jugular vein
CLINICAL-If it is cut, it cannot close as its margins are adherent to the fascia. Hence air is sucked in due to negative intrathoracic pressure causing air embolism. Hence deep fascia has to be cut.
