Posterior Leg Flashcards
Gastrocnemius
-Action: Plantar flexion and flexes leg at knee
Soleus
-Action: Plantar flexion
Plantaris
-Action: Weak plantar flexion and leg flexion
Popliteus
-Action: Unlocks extended leg by laterally rotating femur on a stationary tibia; also flexes leg weakly
Flexor hallucis longus
-Action: Flexes great toe; plantar flex at ankle joint
Flexor digitorum longus
-Action: Flexes lateral four digits; plantar flex foot at ankle joint
Tibialis anterior
-Action: Dorsiflexion and inversion of
Extensor digitorum longus
-Action: Extends lateral four digits; dorsiflexion
Fibularis tertius
-Action: Dorsiflexion and eversion
Extensor hallucis longus
-Action: Extend hallux, dorsiflex ankle
Fibularis longus
-Action: Eversion and plantar flexion
Shin splints
- Due to repetitive microtrauma to tibialis anterior, inducing small tears to periosteum over tibia and/or tears to overlying deep fascia
- Is a mild form of compartmental syndrome (swelling of tibialis anterior due to repetitive ground reaction force)
Superficial posterior group
