Colour can have a profound impact on brain stimulation and memory performance. The human memory is an active information processor that consists of three major processes: encoding, storage and retrieval (Cherry, 2017). Memory recall is the ability to retrieve stored information from either short-term memory or long-term memory. Recent studies suggest that, memories are naturally clustered into related groupings during recall from long-term memory (Cherry, Clustering for Memory and Recall, 2017). According to The University of Minnesota Under graduate Journal of Psychology, humans are notorious for forgetting important information (Richards, Alonzo, & Barsness) and therefore, understanding the interaction between colour and memory can help improve human learning and development.

The aim of the previous research conducted by Mehta and Zhu (2009) was to investigate how cool and warm colours affect subjects performing cognitive tasks (Seeing Red: The Effect of Colour Priming on Detail-Oriented Performance in Achievement Contexts, 2012). Mehta and Zhu evaluated that red and blue activate different motivations and consequently enhance performances on different types of cognitive tasks (Seeing Red: The Effect of Colour Priming on Detail-Oriented Performance in Achievement Contexts, 2012). Red is a dynamic colour that enhances human metabolism and attracts attention more than any other colour (Color Psychology , n.d.). On the other hand, blue is a nostalgic colour that slows metabolism and exhibits an inner security and confidence (Empowered by color, n.d.). Mehta and Zhu validated their theory by performing six corresponding studies. Study 2 investigated the influence of red in a memory performance task. In the experiment, the participants were randomly assigned to either the red, blue or neutral condition. Using a computer screen, each participant was asked to memorize 36 words within 2 minutes and were later asked to recall the same 36 words after a delay of 20 minutes. The results conclude that participants who were tested in front of a red computer screen were actually able to remember more words after twenty minutes (Seeing Red: The Effect of Colour Priming on Detail-Oriented Performance in Achievement Contexts, 2012) while participants in the blue condition exhibited more false recalls (Seeing Red: The Effect of Colour Priming on Detail-Oriented Performance in Achievement Contexts, 2012).

To a degree, the current investigation acquired similar components from Mehta and Zhu’s experiment. Both investigations examined whether blue or red enhanced memory performance. However, instead of recalling 36 words from a computer screen, the current research used PowerPoint slides to analyze recall immediately after 20 words were presented on either a red or blue background. Participants recalled as many words they can remember in 5 minutes. Additionally, the previous research utilized three conditions: red (experimental), blue (experimental) and neutral (control) while the current experiment only tested participants in the red and blue conditions.
The aim of the current study was to investigate if words presented on either a red or blue background effects memory recall in students from Ivanhoe Grammar School.
If colour (Red and Blue) effects memory retention, then it is predicted that students will recall more words that are presented on a red background than students who recall words that are presented on a blue background.
IV: Each group of participants were shown twenty slides. Ten words were presented on a red background while the remaining ten words were presented on a blue background. The words presented on the coloured backgrounds were randomly shown to the participants.

DV: The experiment was measured by counting the number of words recalled by each participant after 5 minutes. The participants were given a blank answer sheet by the experimenters (at the start of the experiment) to write as many words they can recall.
