How did the rationalisation of association football change the game in the 19th century
Urbanisation - lots of people living in one place gave a large audience
More free time - less time in factories

Social class links - middle class involvement and approval made football a more respectable sport to play

How was real tennis rationalised and developed into the modern day game of lawn tennis
Lawn tennis was a middle class invention as the middle class aspired to be like the upper class but were excluded from or could not play real tennis.
They made the game suitable for their suburban housing
They developed private courts as gardens where deemed to be unsuitable to house a tennis court
What is the definition of lawn tennis
Originally called ‘saphairestrike’ and played on an hourglass shaped court before it’s name and court shape were quickly replaced
What are the features of lawn tennis
Used standardised rules
Played by the middle class on suburban gardens on lawn or private tennis courts
Use of specialist equipment - cost five guineas
Middle class invention - affordable alternative to real tennis
Played by males and females
Organised by middle class
Eventually spread to the lower class via parks
How was Athletics rationalised and developed into track and field athletics
The industrialisation of society meant that rural fairs were changed to urban fairs
Athletics became more popular in towns and cities, with purpose built facilities for them
Walking/running races took place over a set distance on race courses
Lots of people spectated and wagered
Upper and middle class would run for fun as the sport was rationalised
Lower class ran for money
Amateur athletic club made the sport available for everyone
Professional became someone who ran for money not just lower class
What is the treatment of elite female athletes like
Track and field athletics was not deemed to be acceptable for women as it is un lady like and hey were unable to follow a strict dress code
Women still excluded from some Olympics
Women capabilities were still getting challenged

Explain the golden triangle
They all rely on each other. Without media coverage sports are less attractive to a business who want their product publicised
Media uses sport to gain viewers
Businesses use the media to advertise their products
Commercialism
The process of attempting to gain money from an activity e.g sport
Sponsorship
When a company pays for their product to be publicly displayed or advertised, usually as an attempt to increase the sales of their goods
Merchandising
The practice in which the brand or image from one ‘product’ is used to sell another, e.g professional sport

Effects of commercialisation on professional performers
Receive high incomes for sports participation and commercial activity, giving them financial security amd train full time
Must specialise in the sport to compete, meaning serious training, self sacrifice and dedication
Successful result = pay rise
under pressure to perform when injured
Controlled by sponsors become public commodities, lack of privacy
Effects of commercialisation on sport
Rules and regulations changed to speed up action to prevent boredom
Breaks are provided during play to advertise sponsors
Sports played by women receive less coverage, can have a negative effect on participation
Increase in technology give the viewer a more personal experience
