1 Re experiencing
2 Avoidance/rumination
3 Hyperarousal/emotional numbing
name the Re-experiencing symptoms of PTSD
Flashbacks
Nightmares (common and repetitive)
Distressing images/senses from the traumatic event during the daytime
name the Avoidance/rumination symptoms of PTSD
pt avoids people/situations
excessively thinks about the event (why me, could it have been prevented, revenge)
name the Hyperarousal/emotional numbing symptoms of {TSD
Hypervigilant to threats (shell shock)
Exagerated startle responses
Irritable
bad concentration poor sleep > angry outbursts difficulty expressing emotions feels detached from others gives up previous activities
Post traumatic stress Disorder starts when?
usually soon after traumatic event
but can be delayed
rare for it to appear later than a year after though
if mild PTSD symptoms Rx
watch and wait for a month
if severe PTSD symptoms Rx
trauma focused cognitive behavioural therapy (TF-CBT)
Eye movement desensitisation and reprocessing (EMDR)
Second line - paroxetine (SSRI) or mirtazepine (a2 = SNRI effects)
