Post-Polio Flashcards
Is polio an upper or lower motor neuron injury?
Lower
What is polio?
Virus that selectively kills alpha motor neurons, resulting in paralysis or paresis, depending on the amount of collateralization of remaining alpha motor neurons with muscle fibers
What is post-polio syndrome?
Condition that appears decades after onset of polio virus, characterized by: Visible muscle weakness, Muscle atrophy, Fatigue, Muscular/Cardiovascular/Respiratory. These interfere with ADL funciton
What is the priority of post-polio interventions?
Energy conservation to help the patient maintain a functional lifestyle
What are the three p’s of post-polio?
Visible muscle weakness
Muscle atrophy
Fatigue Muscular/Cardiovascular/Respiratory
NOT Sue P.
Post-polio syndrome is worse in which patients?
Patients who had MORE paralysis in the initial bout of polio
Interventions for post-polio
Resistive training increases muscle strength and endurance
Strength training, aerobics and stretching increases functional capacity
Respiratory muscle training improve breathing function
What type of breathing intervention is recommended for post-polio patients?
Diaphragmatic
Examples of specific exercises and stretches for post-polio
Bridging, mini squats, hand bike
Passive stretching hamstrings, hip IR/ER and ankle PF/DF
Target Heart Rate for Post-Polio patients
20 BAR
Borg Scale goal for Post-Polio patients?
6-10 (no exertion to minimal exertion)
Should you push these patients to fatigue?
NO. MJ SAID NO.
