Osteoporosis Flashcards
What is Osteoporosis?
Chronic progressive disease characterized by low bone mass, impaired bone quality, decreased bone strength and enhanced risk of fractures
What is the cause of osteoporosis?
Occurs are as a result of a mismatch between osteoclast and osteoblast activity
Osteoporosis is often what?
Asymptomatic
Osteoporosis is more common in what gender?
Women
What is peak bone mass?
The largest amount of bone tissue that a person has at any point in life
Reached by age 30
Risk factors for Osteoporosis
ACCESS
Alcohol use, Corticosteroid use, Calcium low, Estrogen low, Smoking, Sedentary lifestyle
Vertebral fractures are often…
Silent
What is the most common site for osteoporotic fractures?
Vertebrae
PT assessment RED FLAGS
Height loss > 1”
Previous fx,
Family hx
Presence of kyphosis (>7cm occiput to wall distance)
How do you treat a vertebral fracture?
Control pain, positioning to decrease pain, bracing, postural education, vertebroplasty/kyphoplasty
PT treatment goals
Reduce fracture risk
Decrease pain and increase density via muscle contractions and gravitational forces
Strengthen areas at risk-site specific
Optimize posture (maintain neutral spine)
Contraindications for Osteoporosis
Avoid any exercise or activity that involves twisting and/or flexing the spine such as sit-ups, stomach crunches, or toe touches
Exercise Interventions for Osteoporosis
Alignment exercises perch posture, hip hinge, foot press
Strengthening: core, trunk extensors, scapular stabilizers, hip extensors & abductors
Stretching: pectoralis, abdominals, hip flexors
Balance training, falls prevention
Weight bearing, aerobic exercise: walking, stair master, foot stomping
Diaphragmatic breathing
