A

Sx start during pregnancy or w/in 4 weeks of delivery

5+ mood and cognitive Sx for 2 consecutive weeks (1 must be depressed mood or loss of interest in pleasure)

What are postpartum blues

A

Sx start 2-3 days after delivery and RESOLVE w/in 2 weeks of onset
mild, self limited Sx
Don’t need a minimum # of Sx to diagnose!

A

Edinburgh postnatal depression scale

-this is to be done in all postpartum women regardless of Sx, 4-8 weeks after delivery

Symptoms of depression include

A
  • Depressed mood most of day, nearly every day
  • Loss of interest or pleasure in most activities
  • Insomnia or Hypersomnia
  • Significant weight loss or gain (5% in 1 mo)/ decreased appetite
  • Psychomotor retardation or agitation observable by others
  • Fatigue, low energy
  • Decreased ability to concentrate
  • Thoughts of worthlessness or guilt
  • Recurrent thoughts of death or SI
