a pregnant woman
gravid

primigravida
a woman who is pregnant for the first time
multigravida
a woman who has been pregnant more than once
nulligravida
a woman who has never been pregnant
para (P)
a woman who has delivered a viable infant (over the age of 20 weeks), whether alive or stillborn. refers to number of deliveries, not infants
parity
the number of times a woman has delivered a viable infant or infants
nullipara
one who never has borne a viable child (over 20 weeks–para 0)
primipara
a woman who has had one delivery of a viable infants (para II, III)
puerperium
the 6 weeks post partal period
it ends when body returns to pre-pregnant state
3 phases: immediate (first 24 hrs), early (2nd-7th day), late (7th day-6th week)
involution
healing of the birth canal & return of the uterus & all systems to the “almost” pre-pregnant state
When is the rate of involution faster/slower?
faster in primipara than multipara d/t better muscle tone; faster in breast feeding mom than non-breast feeding mom d/t stimulation of oxytocin
slower when uterus over-distended (polyhydraminos, twins, large baby)
gestation
period of fetal development from conception to birth (period of pregnancy)
trimester
refers to a period of three months. pregnancy is divided into 1st, 2nd, 3rd trimesters
term
beginning of 38th week to end of 42nd week
pre term
the 20th week to the end of the 37th week
abortion
spontaneous or therapeutic cessation of pregnancy before 20 weeks
Ab or ETP-elective termination of pregnancy
stillborn
delivery of an infant of viable age (over 20 weeks) who was not alive when delivered
ectopic pregnancy
development of the embryo outside the uterine cavity; not viable; removal surgically approx. 6-8 weeks of pregnancy
