Transfer to PACU
A
- When moving from the OR table rapid movements are avoided
- Side rails are up and warm blankets are placed
- Patients airway is ensured
- Immediate notification of family
- Patient placed in lateral/Sims position to prevent aspiration with tongue
- Code cart within reach

Post operative period
A
- Initial: the initial phase of recovery in PACU, from OR to PACU
- POD1 also known as PACU first day post op: time of discharge from PACU to first day after surgery
- Post operative phase: terminal from time of discharge to healing

PACU Assessment
A
ABC’s
A- Airway
B- Breathing
C- Circulation
Other assessments include:
Loss of consciousness, muscle strength, following commands, IV infusions, drains and tubes, dressings (skin color/temperature/bruising/redness)

Discharge criteria from PACU
A
Patient has to meet an acceptable discharge score from the Aldrete discharge scoring criteria
- this includes activity,respiration,circulation, consciousness, skin color
- O2 sat above 92
- 20 +/— in preop BP
- Minimal temperature of 96.8°F

Incisional assessment
A
- Do not change the first stressing
- To assess drainage Mark with a circle and include the date, time and discharge noted
- Document discharge as scant, moderate or large

Post-Op pain management
A
Assess for pain every 4 to 8 hours
