A

A
  • pain and movement

PONV complications

A
  • corneal damage
  • aspiration of vomit into the lungs
  • damage to operative site, requiring dx change, predisposing it to infection
  • dehydration
  • pain from stress to surgical site
  • increased ICP
  • tear and rupture oesophagus
  • aspiration can lead to pneumonia

A

Prevention is more effective than initiating therapy after the onset of symptoms.
- assess for risk factors
- Apfel score for inpt undergoing surgery

A
  • Minimise use of nitrous oxide, volatile anaesthetics, high-dose neostigmine
  • Consider regional anaesthesia
  • Opioid sparing/ multimodal analgesia
