why do postmodernists believe young people join youth cultures
consumerism
outline the postmodernist view that young people join youth cultures because of consumerism
to consume to latest fashions, styles and trends, they claim that youth cultures are consume orientated.
they argue that young people can not differentiate between what they need and want and are targeted by aggressive marketing
what do postmodernists mean by the collapse of the meta narrative?
from the 17th century onwards, human society was characterized by one science and rationality in bringing about progress, however in the 20th century a number of events lead to people losing faith in these meta narratives ( big stories ) of the world
what is the relativity of knowledge?
having rejected any overarching truths no single type of truth or idea has special status.
what is fragmentation
characteristics ( e.g social class, gender, ethnicity ) have become fractures and it is no longer possible to describe identities in terms of these meta narratives
what is fluidity
breakdown of certantities, e.g religious beliefs were fixed and are not made to suit what is occusing in their lives during a particular time.
what is hybridity
break down of all encompassing truths leading to a pic and mix culture, different metanarratives were combined by indivuals to form their own identites
what are new age traveler
focusing on forming a community and lifestyle that is less structured and consumerist
not just from one class / background, more formed around commonalities
traveled in vehicles - resistance to mundane neutral family home life
what is a supermarket of style?
idea that all choices are available today mean that commitment to one style is far less common
young peoples are reluctant to give themselves labels in contemp society
retro fashion is an example
why do postmodernists think globalization has a significant impact on youth cultures?
- there is more of a choice in what aspects of different cultures to implement into your own identity
- the choice is easier, with a range of factors e.g clothes and style being more common across nations
- more socially acceptable to experiment e.g glam rock
