the labels typically used (structural / agency, micro / macro, conflict / consensus) are considered to be linked to ideas of modernity, hence they cant be used.

why do post-modernists feel that modern theories shouldn’t be used?

A
  • previous theories make generalisations and employ key variables such as gender and class. while these are still important, there are other factors to consider such as ethnicity
  • large scale theories (functionalism, marxism etc.) aren’t suitable as they tend to overly simplify social life

  • giddens argues that although there have been a lot of chnages, we may not have actually reached a postmodern society, but rather a late modern society (-)
  • giddens argues that reflexivity is important. means that we should reflect and question knowledge rather than just accept it. reflection leads us to improve the world which is a feature of modernity (+)
  • beck argues that postmodern society brings greater choice but also brings a risk society (-) (+)
  • postmodernists been criticised for ignoring inequalities that exist in society, which may mean people have less choice than postmodernists suggest (-)
