POST MODERN DESIGN Flashcards
refers to a wide category of contemporary art created from about 1970 onwards.
Postmodernist Art
The hallmark of “postmodernist art”
its rejection of the aesthetics upon which its predecessor - “modern art” – was based. One of these rejected values is the idea that “art” is something “special” which should be “elevated from” popular taste.
Postmodernism has led to almost five decades of artistic experimentation
Conceptual art, Performance art, Installation art, Deconstructivism, Projection art
is an artistic movement in modern art that started around World War I. Its purpose was to ridicule the meaninglessness of the modern world. A later version, called Neo-Dada, arose in the 1960s.
Dadaism
Followers of Dadaism included
ANTONIN ARTAUD, MAX ERNST, and SALVADOR DALI.
what is the GENERAL IDEOLOGY of Postmodernism
“anyone can be famous for 15 minutes” - Andy Warhol
Art education
- Individual “creativity” was considered to be more important than the accumulation of craftsman-like skills.
USE OF TECHNOLOGY
The new range of video and photographic imagery has reduced the importance of drawing skills, artists have been able to short-cut the traditional processes involved in “making art,” but still create something new.
MIXING OF GENRES AND STYLES
postmodernists have enjoyed mixing things up - or injecting novel elements into traditional forms - to create new combinations and pastiches.
Artists of Postmodernism

GEORG BASELITZ
GERHARD RICHTER
JEFF KOONS

GEORG BASELITZ
combined camera art and painting in his ‘photo-paintings’ of the 1970s,
GERHARD RICHTER
combined consumerist imagery (balloon shapes) with highly finished sculptural techniques to create his Balloon Dog pop-sculptures.
JEFF KOONS
these artists believe that the spectator is an equally important judge of meaning.
CINDY SHERMAN, MARINA ABRAMOVIC
Her surrealist photography highlights the idea that a work of art can be interpreted in a variety of ways.

PRINCIPLES of postmodernist painting
bold, bright and instantly recognizable.
whose urinal entitled “Fountain” (1917) was the first famous example of an ordinary object being made into a work of art.
MARCEL DUCHAMP
Championed by ANDY WARHOL (1928-87) who made fine art from banal, mass-produced imagery.
Pop Art
The definitive postmodernist idiom. Never mind the finished product, it’s the underlying idea that counts. The first and (arguably) greatest conceptual artist was YVES KLEIN (1928-62), founder of NOUVEAU REALISME.
Conceptual Art
Pioneered by artists like JOHN CAGE (1912-92) and ALLAN KAPROW (1927- 2006), this genre became a new way to present art to the masses.
PERFORMANCE ART AND HAPPENINGS
A new way to draw spectators into the artwork or assemblage. A leading contributor is the German artist JOSEPH BEUYS (1921- 86).
INSTALLATION ART
Video is one of the most versatile mediums available. A piece of video film can be (1) the work of art itself; and/or (2) a record of how the work of art was made; and/or (3) one element in an installation; and/or (4) part of a multiple-video arrangement. Whatever its precise role, video makes art more dynamic, more absorbing, more exciting.
Video Art
- A hyperrealist form of painting, typically based on photographs. Leading photorealists include CHUCK CLOSE and RICHARD ESTES. Photorealist sculptors include JOHN DE ANDREA, DUANE HANSON, and CAROLE FEUERMAN.
PHOTOREALISM
The YBAs were just one of several postmodernist groups to champion the use of camera art. In fact, works by the greatest photographers soon passed the $1 million mark at auction.
PHOTOGRAPHY
made the “your body is a battleground” poster.
