POST MID TERM, Week 7 learning outcomes Flashcards
Be able to explain why physical activity alone is not a solution for poor health
Clear benefits of physical actives
BUT researches point out this is too simple to assume PA will solve serious problems
Heart disease
cancer
diabetes..etc
Social determinants of health/structural perspective and how it differs from understanding on individual level
individual; genetics, lifestyle choices and immediate environment
Environmental level: Structural conditions shaping our life. factors beyond an individual, constraining.
takes a population health perspective
ex: access to education, housing, security…etc
Ideology of healthism
“a societal preoccupation with health at the individual level rather than external factors influencing health, such as culture, environment, the economy, or other considerations”
moralizing ideology, similar to urban living was leading to vice, making young men soft and leading to juvenile delquency
importance of willpower, self control,
and individual responsibility to
maintain one’s health
Understand some of the upstream and downstream determinants of physical activity
Upstream: structural/ society level
-opportunity
- societal norms (social and cultural)
Downstream: individual level
- knowledge and belief of PA
- time and biological factors
Body size and stigma
People who have larger bodies are often judged for perceived lack of self-control or discipline (even though “health” can look different for different bodies)
bmi: doesn’t take in body type and ethnicity
bmi alone can’t be used in medial practice
