Post-labor complications Flashcards
1
Q
RDS risk factors
A
Most important is prematurity, but other factors include male sex, perinatal asphyxia, maternal diabetes, and c-section without labor.
2
Q
How does maternal diabetes increase the incidence of RDS?
A
Maternal hyperglycemia causes fetal hyperglycemia, which in turn triggers fetal hyperinsulinism. High levels of circulating insulin antagonize cortisol and block the maturation of sphingomyelin, a vital component of surfactant.
