Post-Exam - Climate Change Flashcards
1
Q
Key Aspects of Climate Change
A
- It occurs quickly
- Half of all emissions from fossil fuels have been in the last thirty years
- There’s no immediate consequences
- There will an increase of four degrees by 2100 if no action is taken
- By 2050 many Asian or Middle Eastern cities will be uninhabitable due to the heat
- It is likely that there will be 2x the amount of water and 1/2 the amount of food
- There could be a decrease of up to 20% of all GDP
- It is likely to have a bigger impact than the Great Depression, and will be permanent
- It is already outside the window of historical temperatures

Q
Challenges to action
A
- Very vast and complicated
- It is unlikely that it will be able to be beaten
- The current world order is short sighted and nationalistic
- The rich and powerful who can contribute the most, will want to contribute the least
- Nuclear isn’t as competitive as renewable energies

Q
Causes
A
- Fossil fuels (half of all of their emissions being in the last thirty years)
- Oil and gas industry (Oil produces the largest amount of energy in the world, and gas is third)
- Concrete (If it was a country, it would be third in the world for emissions)
- All of these causes are anthropogenic
