At first Lincoln’s goal was to preserve the Union.After issuing the Emancipation proclamation the war changed to be about bringing the end of slavery. He stated that in his Gettysburg Address.

-felt the gov’t of the US was infringing on their rights to secession

What did the Emancipation Proclamation do?
Lincoln made his feelings about slavery known, that he wanted to end it. He knew he had no legal rights but it proclaimed the direction he wanted to take the country.
