-a secret network of free Black and White people who helped enslaved people escape to free states and Canada

Dred Scott decision
a supreme court decision in 1857 said that African Americans could not be citizens and the Missouri Compromise was unconstitutional

beginning of war= was about preserving the Union
end= its about slavery; he didn’t mention slavery until the end bc he wanted the southern vote
-after Gettysburg address he spoke out against slavery
-elected in 1860, reelected in 1864
