Fowlers
Head of bed elevated 45-60 degree.
Knees elevated.
Supine
On back.
Legs extended.
Avoid hip flexion.
Side-lying (lateral)
Allows drainage of oral secretions.
SIMS
On side with leg bent.
Use for rectal exams.
Allows drainage of oral secretions.
Prone
Lies on abdomen with head to side and feet in plantar flexion.
Promotes extension of hips.
Not for patients with respiratory or cardiovascular difficulties.
Dorsal recumbent
Supine with knees flexed.
Trendelenburg
Feet elevated with head lowered.
Used to insert CVP line or treatment of umbilical cord compression.
Modified Trendelenburg
Feet elevated 20 degrees.
Knees straight and head slightly elevated.
Increases venous return.
Used for shock.
Knee Chest
Rectal exams.
