Purpose of positioning
-Increase expanding of the liungs and facilitate breathing process
-Prevent decubitus ulcer
-Encourage flow of secretion
Describe
Recumbent Position
Dorsal recumbent
-Lying on back with one pillow under head & shoulder
-Extremities placed straight
Indications
Recumbent Position
-Provide comfort to patient
-Prevent decubitus ulcer
-Encourage blood circulation back to the heart
Describe
Supine
-Lying on back without any pillow
-All extremities placed in straight position
Indications
Supine
-Patient with injury at spinal
-Post lumbar puncture
-Immobilize the spinal cord to encourage balance to cerebrospinal fluid pressure
-Post-general anesthesia
Describe
Lateral Position
-Lie down laterally on one side of body (left side-left lateral, right side-right lateral)
-Both hand flex forward of the head
-Bottom leg placed in straight, upper leg flexed
-Place pillow under the head, in between knee and in between 2 hands [3 pilows]
Indiations
Lateral Position
-Maintain respiratory tract patent
-Perform examination at rectum (left lateral)
-Prevent develop of decubitus ulcer
Describe
Fowler’s Position
Lie down with elevated head supported with a pillow
-Low-Fowler’s (15-30)
-Semi-Fowler’s (45-60)
-High Fowler’s (60-90)
Indications
Fowler’s Position
-Promote patient’s lungs expansion
-Encourage secretion flow from chest / abdomen thru catheter
Describe
Prone Position
-Lying fully on abdomen & chest position
-Both hands flexed at head level
-Both legs straight
