Recumbent
When an animal is laying down
Lateral recumbency
When an animal is laying on its side
Sternal recumbency
When an animal is laying on its belly
Dorsal recumbency
When an animal is laying in its back
Cranial - caudal
Cranial- toward the head
Caudal toward the tail
Dorsal - ventral
Dorsal - refers to the dorsum, or back if the animal
Ventral - refers to the ventrum or belly of the animal
Palmar - plantar
Palmar - bottom of the animals front feet
Plantar- the bottom of the hind feet
Medial - lateral
Medical- midline of the body
Lateral- away from the middle of the body
Proximal - distal
Proximal - closer
Distal - farther
Superficial- deep
Superficial- close to the surface of the skin
Deep- deep or internal wound
Dorsal plane
A dorsal plane divides the body into dorsal ( too - facing the ceiling) and central ( bottom - facing the ground ) areas
Sagittarius plane
Divides the body into left and right parts. A mid Sagittarius plane ( or medial plane) goes through the exact median of the body diving it into two near mirror images
Transverse plane
Cross sectional plane divides the body into cranial and caudal parts.
