Sagittal plane
Sagittal left/right division
Frontal plane
Anterior and Posterior division
Horizontal / Transverse plane
Superior/ inferior or cranial/ caudal division
Anterior / Ventral
Situated in front of; the front of the body
Posterior (dorsal)
Situated behind; the back of the body
Superior (cranial)
Toward the head; relatively higher in position
Inferior (caudal)
Away from the head; relatively lower in position
Medial
Toward the midline of the body
Lateral
Away from the midline of the body
Proximal
Closer to any point of reference, such as the attached end of a limb, the origin of a structure, or the centre of the body
Superficial (external)
Located close to or on the body surface
Deep (internal)
Located further beneath the body surface than superficial structures
Distal
Away from any point of reference, eg centre of the body
