Bone Features Flashcards
Types of bones, wider bone facts
Name the two types of elevation and projection
1) Ramus
2) Process
Describe similarity in the following bone process:
1) Trochanter
2) Tuberosity
3) Tubercle
A large, round projection.
Trochanter is the largest
Tubercle is the smallest
Describe similarity in the following bone processes:
1) Crest
2) Line
3) Spine
A small, long and narrow projection
Head of a bone
Hint: process
Rounded projection that forms part of a joint.
Separated from shaft of same bone by a narrow portion (see neck).
Neck of a bone
Hint: process
Section of bone between ‘head’ and ‘shaft’. Narrow portion, usually at base of head.
Condyle
Hint: process
Rounded bump, large round prominence.
Usually fit into ‘fossa’ on another bone to form a joint.
Epicondyle
Hint: process
Bump near Condyle. Smaller than a Condyle.
For muscle attachment
Trochlea
Hint: process
Pulley shaped part or structure
Facet
Hint: process
Smoothie, flat surface.
May form a joint with another facet or bone.
Name the two types (2) of bone depression:
Fossa: indentation for another bone. Broad, shallow.
Sulcus: indentation made by a tendon. Narrow.
What is the appendicular skeleton?
The pectoral girdle and upper limbs.
The pelvic girdle and lower limbs.
Main function = movement
What is the Axial skeleton?
It is made up of the skull, spine and the thoracic cage.
Main function = PROTECTION
