Q

What does a verb’s conjugation tell you?

A

Who is doing the action. The number of people (I vs. we) and singular (you) vs. plural (you). Whether your relationship to that person is formal or informal. When the action is happening (past, present, or future tense). The certainty (based on which tense/mood is used). The action itself.

21
Q

Why do we group você and vocês as 3rd person instead of 2nd person?

A

Você and vocês are technically 2nd person (you), however they are typically grouped in the 3rd person category for simplicity, because this is how they are conjugated.

22
Q

The verb forms for the personal pronouns ele, ela, and você (formal) are always conjugated the same way. If you wanted to say “he is”, “she is”, or “you are”, how would you say that in Portuguese?

A

Ele é = he is
Ela é = she is
Você é = you are

23

The verb forms for the personal pronouns eles, elas, and vocês are always conjugated the same way. If you wanted to say “they are” (masculine), “they are” (feminine), or “you are” (plural), how would you say that in Portuguese?

elas

25
Q

If we are talking about a group of males or a mixed group of men and women, which form of “they” do we use?

A

eles

26
Q

“It” corresponds to the 3rd person singular verb conjugation, but Portuguese doesn’t actually use neutral pronouns like “it”. In cases where you would expect to use “it”, there is often no pronoun at all. How would you say “It’s Saturday”?

A

É Sabado = is Saturday, aka It’s Saturday.

27
Q

In some cases, when referring to inanimate objects (depending of whether they are masculine or feminine), what Portuguese word can we use?

A

ele (masculine) or ela (feminine)

28
Q

Is it ok to sometimes omit the personal pronoun in Portuguese? Why?

A

Yes, omitting the pronoun is not just for the word “it” though. In Portuguese, it’s very common to omit the personal pronouns (eu, tu, ele, etc.) preceding a verb. This is because in most contexts, the verb conjugation already tells you who is doing the action.

29
Q

What are the three main ways to say “you” in Portuguese?

A

tu = you (informal/close family)
você = you (formal)
vocês = you (plural)
