When do you use a definite articles (the)?
When a sentence starts with a noun. When referring to something specific. Before a persons name. Before certain country names.
Os cães são mamiforos.
Dogs are mammals.
Não tenho o carro.
I don’t have the car.

I am Ana.

When do you not use definite articles (the)?
When referring to something more general or undefined. When using the vocative case, such as a greeting. Don’t use (the) before the names of planets, stars, and most cities (unless the name is derived from a noun like “O Porto”).
