Ports and Harbor Flashcards
A protected water area to provide safe and suitable accommodation for ships for the transfer of cargo, refueling, repairs, etc
Harbor
A sheltered place where the ship may received or discharged cargo
Port
Navigable channel in a harbor
Fairway
A place where the ship can moor
Berth
A solid structure which projects into the sea perpendicular to the shore berth vessels
Jetty
A platform built parallel to the shore within the harbor to berth vessels
Wharf
A STRUCTURE that PROTECTS the HARBOR FROM STORMY WAVES and PERMIT CALM in the harbor
Breakwater
Waves in which the ratio of water depth to the wavelength is equal to or less than 0.40
Shallow water waves
Waves in which the ratio of the water depth to wavelength is less than 0.50 but greater than 0.40
Intermediate water waves
Waves in which the ratio of water depth to wavelength is greater than 0.5
Deep water waves
Waves which fall forward since the forward velocity of the crest particles exceeds the velocity of propagation of the wave itself. In deep water this normally occurs when the wavelength L IS LESS THAN Times THE WAVE HEIGHT (L<7H) and in shallow water with depth d is approximately equal to 1.25H (H is wave height)
Breaking waves
WAVES GENERATED by WIND that are acting on the sea surface bordering on the port site
Wind waves
Waves generated by storms which occur outside the area of observation
Swell waves
A very long standing wave on a large but limited body of water generally occurring when a storm dies after producing a wind tide
Seiche Waves
Waves formed by moving ships or boats
Wakes
