Used to connect external display devices such as projectors and monitors. Transmits an analog video signal. Has 3 rows of 5 pins. Uses a DE-15 connector often called DB-15.
VGA (DE-15)
Used to connect display devices. Carries either an analog signal, a digital signal, or both. Supports one of two cable and connector types, single link or dual link.
DVI
Used to send high-quality digital video and audio signals.
HDMI or DisplayPort
Combines PCI Express and DisplayPort signals into a single interface. Can also provide DC power. Mainly used for external displays.
Thunderbolt
Sends digital audio signals to high-end audio devices.
Coaxial S/PDIF
Fiber S/PDIF
Used to create ethernet networks by connecting multiple computers and networking devices. Has eight connector pins.
RJ45
Used by telephones and modems to send analog signals. Has four connector pins.
RJ11
Used to connect older mice and keyboards.
Purple = Keyboard
Green = Mouse
PS/2 (Mini-DIN-6)
Used to connect serial devices such as barcode scanners, dial-up modems, or serial mice. Used to configure and manage some networking devices. RS-232 is the standard for serial communication transmission of data.
Serial (DB-9)
Connects older devices that use a parallel interface, such as printers, hard drives, and gamepads.
Parallel (DB-25)
Used by legacy gamepads, joysticks, and MIDI devices. Typically found on older sound cards.
DB-15
Separated video port used for connecting external displays. Slightly better picture quality than an RCA video port.
S-Video (miniDin-4)
Used to send or receive analog audio signals. Uses 3.5mm TRS connectors to connect audio devices.
