The development of collateral vessels around an obstructed vessel
Why might a portal vein obstruction patient acutely develop ascites?

Usually following a GI bleed – the RBC load sometimes causes a transient hepatic decompensation
Why might a portal vein obstruction patient develop steatorrhea or enteropathy?
Venous congestion can damage the mucosa
What activity modification might be needed for patients with portal vein obstruction?
Splenic precautions –
If splenomegaly is present
What are splenic precautions?
- No contact sports (or must use a “spleen guard”)
* No NSAIDs (risk of bleeding)
