Touriga Franca
Early/mid - late = warm sites. Tight bunches, thick skin, fungal resistant. Vigorous. Colour and tannin, red and black fruit, floral.
Tinta Roriz (Tempranillo)
Early - early = cool sites. Powdery mildew, eutypa dieback fairly resistant to botrytis bunch rot. Body and colour. Capable of producing high yields -> needs to be limited or wines can lack concentration. Raspberry and black plum fruit.
Tinta Barroca
Early - early = cool sites - Baixo and Cima - prone to heat damage and grape shrivelling. Less floral, more earthy flavours soft, full-bodied, cherry and blackberry can lack acidity unless in coolest sites. Colour tends to fade quickly. High yields.
Tinta Amarela (Trincadeiro)
Early/mid - early. Tight bunches - prone to fungal disease.Fll body, black fruit and spice, approachable in youth + capable of ageing.
Touriga Nacional
Early - mid. Coulure => can lower yields substantially & cause vine imbalance, vigorous. Thick skinned. Deep colour and tannin. Retains acid. Black fruit and floral.
Tinto Cão (red dog)
Early - late. Small thin skinned, fungal restistant, heat tolerant. Low yielding. Concentrated wines, high acid.
Sousão (Vinhão in other regions)
Mid/late - midlate.Thick skinned. Deep colour acid. In Douro: found mainly in the old mixed vineyards e.g. in ungrafted Nacional vineyard of Quinta do Noval. E.g. by Symington: appreciated for acidity / freshness.
Malvasia Fina (Boal in Maderia)
WHITE Late - early. Neutral, medium acidity, full body. Honey character. In Madeira: Boal Cachudo - grows best in warm, low-altitude sites in S of island, need irrigation. Easy to grow.
Moscatel Galego Branco
Early - mid (Muscat blanc à petits grains) Drought tolerant, aromatic.
