Where is Port from?
The DO Porto in Portugal. The vineyards are in the Duoro Valley, 70kms upstream the Duoro Valley.
What are the 3 sub regions on the Duoro Valley?
The Baixo Corgo- the most westerly region, coolest and wettest and produces the lightest wines.
The Cima Corgo- the most central region with the greatest number of top vineyards
The Duoro Superior- most easterly, sparsely planted but with premium quality
What is the climate?
Generally speaking a warm continental climate, however varies. The west is cooler and wetter and as the vineyards get more easterly they progressively become dryer and hotter
What is a geographical factor influencing climate?
The “Serra do Maroa” mountains to the west of the vineyards protect from the cool rainy winds from the Atlantic.
What is the soil type?
Schist bedrock- this fractures vertically, allowing roots to access deep water reserves during the summer.
What are some climactic challenges in the vineyard?
Spring frosts and heavy downpours can disrupt flowering and harvest.
