Porifera & Cnidarian Flashcards
The most simple marine animal.
Sponge
Not a characteristic of a Cnidarian.
Having a complex nervous system
Which Cnidarian class form colonies with specialized polyps?
Hydrozoa
Which Cnidarian class has organisms in the polyp stage only?
Anthozoa
Which is not a requirement for Coral Reef growth?
Pollution
Jellyfish have a limited swimming ability, so they are known as…
Nektonic
Which type of coral reef is the most common?
Fringing
Which type of coral reef forms due to a volcano sinking?
Atolls
Porifera actually means _____ which makes sense because sponges have many that are called _____
Pore-bearing, Ostia
The cells that line the canals of the sponge are called…
Choanocytes or Collar Cells
The 2 components that can make up a sponge’s skeleton are…
Spongin and Spicules
The scientific name for the stinging cells on jellyfish is…
Cnidocytes
Coral secrete their skeletons made of…
Calcium Carbonate
Example of an Anthozoa.
Coral
Example of Ctenophora.
Comb Jellies
Example of Hydrozoa.
Portuguese Man-O-War
Example of Hexaxtinellida.
Glass Sponge
Example of Scyohozoa.
True Jellies
Example of Calcarea.

What are the 2 purposes that the collar cells serve?
The movement and direction of water-flow, and the storage and intake of nutrients.
Explain in detail the reproduction process of a sponge. (draw photo)

What type of symmetry is a sea anemone? What does that mean?
Radial Symmetry; When or if the body is divided along and main axis, there is no notable front or back because it is perfectly symmetrical.
The sea anemone is both benthic and sessile. What does each mean as a characteristic of the sea anemone?
It’s benthic because it lives on the ocean floor, but sessile because it will forever be attached to the ocean floor, meaning it does not move.
Jellyfish have stinging cells to help them catch prey. What are the stinging cells called? What are the stingers on the cell called? What do these cells do to help them catch their prey?
Cnidocytes, Nematocysts. When touched, the cells will shoot out into the “prey” and capturing it in its immobile form.
Explain zooxanthellae symbiosis.
Algea called zooxanthellae live within coral tissues for protection, whilst also providing nutrients to the corals through photosynthesis.
Based on the information you provided about the symbiotic relationship, describe any additional information this tells you about coral.
Corals must live in shallow waters in order to gain sunlight.
What would be some dangers to the coral reef?
Global Warming, pollution, too high or low temperature, hurricanes, runoff, bleaching.
