Porifera And Radiata - Sponges Flashcards
Phylum Porifera - filter feeders, sessile and no body symmetry. What am i?
A SPONGE!!!
How does a Porifera (sponge) get its food?
With its choanocytes - they contain a flagellate which draws water in through the spongocoel and out a large open called the osculum
How do Porifera (sponges) reproduce?
Asexually - budding so the offspring is a clone!!!
Sexually - when the sponge is monoecious (the sponge produces both male and female gametes)
What organism has biradial symmetry, have cnidoyctes (stingers), have a hydrostatic skeleton, and are a very ancient phylum?
Phylum radiata - cnidarians and Ctenophora!!! JELLYFISH!!!!!!!!!
What germ layers to cnidarians (jelly fish) have?
A ectoderm and endoderm
What is the mesoglea?
A translucent, jelly like substance found between the ectoderm and endoderm in cnidarians. Functions the hydrostatic skeleton
Cnidarians are coelomates, aceolomes or psudeocoelomates?
Acoeloamtes - they have no coelomatic cavity, instead they have the mesoglea
What are the four classes of cnidarians?
Anthozoa (sea anemones and corals)
Hydrozoa (hydra)
Cubozoa (box jellies)
Scyphozoa (jellyfish)
