Porifera Flashcards
Acoelomate
composed of cells, no tissues
Habitat
primarily ocean and some in fresh water
sessile
move slowly
ascon
water goes in through choanocytes through ostia (pore from the outside), osculum is the opening of the choanocytes. Spongeocoel is at the bottom. Ostia allows food to go in and block out large food. Non-feeding part is bigger than feeding part.
sycon
inside folded up (which contains a larger surface area without increasing outside surface area). Water pumps through ostia and leaves through osculum
leucon
it’s circular and contain ostia inside and osculum on the outside surface area. Contains choanocytes connected by the connecting tubes
pinacocytes
cells on the outside(skin)
porocyte
pipe like cell goes from outside to inside
choanocytes
The spongocoel is lined with flagellated cells called choanocytes. By beating flagella, the choanocytes create a current that draws water in through the pores and out through the osculum.
Mesohyl
middle, non cellular layer
amebocytes
these cells can transport nutrients to other cells of the sponge body, produce materials for skeletal fibers (spicules) or become any type of sponge cell as needed.
how do they eat?
filter feeder
predators and defense
eaten by sea stars and sea slugs
use spicules as defense (sharp pointy and poisonous)
digestion
intracellular
excretion
diffusion
