Porifera Flashcards
What is the common name for members of the phylum Porifera?
Sponges
What level of organization do members of the phylum Porifera demonstrate?
Cellular level of organization
What are the sponge’s flagellated feeding cells that line the cavities and create currents of water?
Choanocytes
What two main structures can help to support sponges?
Spongin (fibers) and/or spicules (internal skeleton)
Name the phylum, class, and order of the syconoid sponge Sycon.
Phylum: Porifera; Class: Calcarea; Order: Heterocoela
Explain the order in which water flows through a Sycon sponge.
- Dermal ostium 2. Incurrent canal 3. Prosopyle 4. Radiated canal 5. Apopyle 6. Spongocoel 7. Osculum
What are the organisms that are a result of asexual reproduction in some sponges, which can later develop into a sponge?
Gemmule
What are the four classes of Porifera?
Calcarea, Demospongiae, Hexactinellida, Homoscleromorpha
Describe each classes of Calcarea and hexactinellida.
Calcarea- all marine; spicules of calcium carbonate; spicules needle shaped, 3 rayed, or 4 rayed; canal systems asconoid, syconoid, or leuconoid
Hexactinellida- all marine; mostly deep water glass sponges; spicules 3-D, 6-rayed siliceous; spicules often united to form network; body often cylindrical; syconoid or leuconoid
Describe class Demospongiae.
Mostly marine; with siliceous spicules (not 6-rayed) or spongin or both; canal systems leuconoid; most sponges belong to this class
Describe class Homoscleromorpha.
Skeleton reduced; spicules lacking in some
