We get our understanding of crime through the media and now increasing social media.
What is the critical approach to media?
It is influenced in academic analysis, looks at the the media as a way of controlling the people. Plays a major role in moral panics.
What is the pluralist approach to media?
The serving of the people, embodiment of intellectual freedom and diversity. Sees the audience as knowledgeable.
How does the media frame crime?
the media doesn’t simply record facts. It bends and distorts reality, representing issues in a certain way. It is a production process.
What is meant by the term fake news?
This is information distributed via a medium, which often benefits a specific social setting or group which is then proved to be incorrect. It is propaganda.
What is a social media bubble?
We tend to stick in spheres with people who share our outlook in life.
What is an echo chamber?
This is where we find our views being constantly reinforced. Fake news plays a vital role in this process.
