Populations in Ecosystems Flashcards
What is an ecosystem
all the organisms living in a community and all the abiotic conditions in the are they are found in
Niche
a specific role of a species within its habitat
Describe and ecosystem
varying in size
What’s an habitat
place where an organism lives within the ecosystem
Describe the different interactions an organism could ahem that relate to its niche
Biotic interactions – the organism eats it and those it’s eaten by
Abiotic interactions – the temperature range an organism can live in, time of day when an organism is active
State the abiotic and biotic factors in an ecosystem
Biotic factors might be fish, plant life
Abiotic factors might be temperature of the water, pH of the water
Why can a niche only be occupied by one specie
as every species neigh is unique
What happens if a specie share a niche
there would be conception
What features can help a member of a specie survive and reproduce
Biotic interactions – the organism eats it and those it’s eaten by
Abiotic interactions – the temperature range an organism can live in, time of day when an organism is active
Describe natural selection
Organism with better adaptations are more likely to survive and reproduce, passing on the advantageous alleles, increasing their frequency in the population. The adaptation becomes more common.
Give examples of how organisms are adapted to abiotic conditions
Otters have webbed paws –they can walk on land and swim effectively, increasing survival as they can hunt on land and in the water
Hedgehogs hibernate – lowering their metabolism over winter, increases survival due to energy conservation
Give examples of biotic conditions
Chimpanzees use twigs to fish termites out of mounds, increasing survival as it increases food sources
Mating calls which are species specific
