Populations Flashcards
What is a population?
A population is a group of individuals of the same species living in a particular habitat.
Why do individuals live in populations?
- Habitat provides food,shelter,light etc.
- Breed
- More protection in a group.
Disadvantages of living in a population: (4)
- Overcrowding
- Competition for food,light,space
- Some will be better adapted to compete than others
- Those not so well adapted may not survive
What is maximum rate of growth called?
Exponential growth
Where can exponential growth on take place?
Under ideal environmental conditions
Name things which prevent populations from increasing:(8)
- Food and Water
- Oxygen
- Toxic Wastes
- Overcrowding
- Predators
- Disease
- Climate
- Lack of Shelter
True or False
Sometimes populations do not level off and they crash dramatically
True
What affects population size?
Births
Deaths
Immigration
Emigration
Births _____ to a population
Deaths _____ a population
Movement into a population is called ________.
Movement out of a population is called _______.

Decreases
Immigration
Emigration
You may need to estimate the size of a population for a ______ investigation. You won’t be able to count all the individuals in a population so you need to take a ______. The more samples you take, the more accurate your _____ will be.
Scientific
Sample
Data
This is easier to do if you are looking at plants. You use a metal or a wooden frame called _______. Put it on the vegetation. Now count the number of a particular plant present inside the quadrant. Estimate how many quadrats you would need to cover the habitat. Multiply this by the number of plants that you found in the quadrat to get the total ________.
Quadrats
Population
How do we get a quick estimate of a particular plant population?
We use percentage cover. This is the amount of ground by a particular plant inside the quadrat.
Why would sampling animals be much more difficult?
Because they move around and would not stay inside the quadrat
How would we sample animals?
Trap them humanely, we then use the mark , release, recapture method to estimate the size of the population.
