Populations 4.1 Flashcards
Definition of a population…
All the organisms of one species in a habitat
Definition of a community…
Populations of different species in a habitat make up a community
Definition of an ecosystem…
All the organisms living in a particular area and all the non-living conditions. E.g. A freshwater ecosystem such as a lake
Definition of abiotic conditions…
The non-living features of the ecosystem e.g. Temperature and water availability
Definition of biotic factors…
The living features of the ecosystem, e.g. The presence of food
Definition of adaptation…
A feature that members of a species have that increases their chance of survival and reproduction.
Definition of habitat…
The place where an organism lives
Example of adaptations to abiotic conditions…
Webbed paws
Whales have a thick layer of blubber
Example of adaptations to biotic factors…
Sea otters use rocks to smash open clams
Scorpions dance before mating
What is abundance?
The number of individuals of one species in a particular area
Mark release recapture equation…
Total Number in 1st Number caught in 2nd
Population = Sample X. Sample
————————————————-
Number marked in 2nd sample
What is birth rate?
Number of live births each year for every 1000 people in the population
What is death rate?
Number of people that die each year for every 1000 people in a population
Population growth equation
Population growth = birth rate - death rate
