What is population structure?
The composition of a population according to age groups and gender is known as the age-sex structure. It can be represented by means of a population pyramid.
What does a population pyramid show you?
They show the results of birth minus deaths in specific age groups, the effects of migration, the effects of events such as war famine disease and an indication of the overall life expectancy of a country.
What does the vertical axis show?
This has the population in age bands of 5 years.
What does the horizontal axis show?
This shows the number or percentage of males and females.
What does the height of a pyramid show?
Longevity.
Why do population pyramid vary for different countries?
Because of different demographic factors- birth rates, death rates, fertility rates, wars and migration.
Can population structures show what stage of the DTM a country is in?
Yes, as a countries population structure changes through time as it moves through the stages of the DTM.
What other indices can measure age structure?
Depencey ratio, support ratio, the juvenility index and op-age index.
