Population Notes - 2 Flashcards
What is growth of population?
Growth of population refers to the CHANGE in number of INHABITANTS of a country/ territory during a specific TIME PERIOD.
What are the ways that change in population be represented?
1) Absolute numbers
2) Percentage change per year.
What are absolute numbers?
The absolute numbers added each year or decade is the magnitude of increase.
It is obtained by SUBTRACTING the EARLIER POPULATION from the LATER population. And k/a absolute increase.
What is ANNUAL GROWTH RATE?
The rate of population increase is another important aspect. It’s is studied in PER CENT PER ANUM. This is revered as annual growth rate.
What is the increase in India’s population?
361 million in 1951 to 1028 million in 2001
What years was the annual rate of population steadily increasing?
1951 to 1981
What happened in 1951 to 1981?
The annual rate of population was steadily increasing.
What does the steady increase in annual rate of popular in 1951 to 1981 explain?
It explains the increase in population from
361 million in 1951
to
683 million in 1981
When did the rate of growth start declining?
Since 1981
What started to happen since 1981?
1) The growth rate of population started declining.
2) Birth rates declined rapidly.
What was the annual addition larger than before?
182 million people were added to the total population in 1990s alone.
What happens when a low annual rate is applied to a very large population?
When a low annual rate is applied to a very large population it yields a large absolute increase.
When even more than billion people are added even at a lower rate the total numbers adding still become very large.
How does India’s large population neutralise efforts?
India’s annual increase in a population of 15.5 million is large enough to NEUTRALISE efforts to CONSERVE the RESOURCE ENDOWMENT and environment.
What does the declining trend of growth indicate?
The declining trend of growth rate is indeed a POSITIVE INDICATOR of the efforts of birth control.
When might India overtake China?
In 2045
What are the three main processes of change of population?
1) Birth Rates
2) Death Rates
3) Migration
What is the natural increase of population?
The natural increase of population is the difference between the birth rates and the death rates.
What is birth rate? How does it affect the population of India?
Birth rate is the number of LIVE BIRTHS PER 1000 persons in a year.
Major component of growth because in India B.R > D.R
What is death rate?
Death rate is the number of deaths PER 1000 people in a YEAR.
The main cause of growth in population is MAJOR DECLINE IN D.R.
What happened TILL 1980?
High birth rates and declining death rates led to a LARGER DIFFERENCES resulting in higher rates of population growth.
What happened SINCE 1981?
Birth rates have started to decline resulting in DECLINE RATE of population growth.
What is Migration?
1) Migration is the movement of people across regions and territories.
2) Migration can be internal or external.
3) internal migration doesn’t change the size but changes the DISTRIBUTIONS.
4) Migration plays am important role in changing the COMPOSITION and DISTRIBUTION.
What are the trends of migration India?
Usually people migrate from rural areas to urban areas. Because rural areas have the PUSH FACTOR due to
1) Poverty
2) Unemployment
While Urban areas have the PULL FACTOR due to
1) Increased Employment
2) Better living conditions
Increase in urban population.
17.29% in 1951 to 27.78 % in 2001.
