Climate- till factors affecting India's climate Flashcards
Major controls of the climate
1) Latitude
2) Altitude
3) Pressure and wind system
4) distance form the sea (continentality)
5) ocean currents
6) relief features
Latitude
1) Due to the curvature of the earth the amount of solar energy received varies according to latitude.
2) Air temperature decreases from the equator towards the poles.
Altitude
1) Higher altitude means that the atmosphere becomes less dense and the temperature increases.
2) Hills cooler in the summer.
Pressure and Wind system
1) Pressure and wind system of any area depends on its latitude and altitude.
2) Thus it influences the Temperature and rainfall pattern.
Distance from the sea
1) The sea exerts a moderating influence on the climate.
2) As the distance from the sea increases its moderating influence decreases and people experiment extreme weather conditions.
3) This condition is k/a continentality.
Ocean currents
1) Ocean currents along with onshore winds effect the climate of coastal areas.
2) For ex: any coastal area with warm or cold currents flowing past it will be warmed or cooled if the winds are onshore.
Relief Features
1) High mountains acts as barriers for cold or hot winds.
2) Thy many also cause precipitation if they are high enough and lie in the path of rain bearing winds.
3) The leeward side of the mountains remain relatively dry.
