Population Ecology Flashcards
1
Q
Population Ecology
A
The dynamics of a population overtime, which oversees deaths and birth rates
2
Q
2 models of Population Ecology
A
- Exponential Growth: The accelerated growth pattern of a species as a result in an environment with unlimited resources, unrealistic since environments will always have limiting resources
- Logistics Growth: The result of growth due to limited resources, more realistic since resources are limiting overtime
3
Q
What’s Carrying Capacity (K)
A
The max amount of organisms an environment can support, where K isn’t constant due to seasons, events, and competition
4
Q
Population Growth Regulation
A
Factors that increase or decrease the size of an environments population
5
Q
Two types of Population Growth Regulation
A
- Density-Dependent: Refers to regulating the growth of a population through biological factors such as Disease, Competition, and Predation
- Density-Independent: Refers to regulating the growth of a population through physical factors such as Fires, Droughts, and other catastrophe
6
Q
r-Selected
A
Species type that matures early in life, usually they have lots of offspring with little to none parental care, and have no hierarchy
7
Q
K-Selected
A
Species type that matures later in life, have few offspring with lots of parental care, and have a hierarchy
