Population dynamics Flashcards
What did Darwin say about populations?
That if populations grew without any control they would continue to increase.
What effects populations?
Emigration, births, deaths and immigration.
What are r strategists?
They have many offspring and care less for individual young. They usually begin breeding early in life and have short gestation periods. There are boom and bust cycles and populations are effected by major environmental catastrophes.
What are k strategists?
Animals have few offspring, care more for individual young and they begin breeding later on i life. They have more stable habitats but populations are vulnerable due to having few offspring.
What are density dependent factors?
The amount of water or food available, the number of predators, pests, dieaseses and availability of nest sites.
What are density independent factors which affect populations?
Drought, flood, fire, storms and human interference.
