population definitions Flashcards
population distribution
the way in which a population is spread out over an area.
natural increase and how its calculated
the change in the natural population of a country or place. calculated by subtracting birth rate by death rate.
(birth rate - death rate)
Emigration vs Immigration
Emigration (E for exit) the movement of ppl out a country. Immigration (I for into) movement of ppl into a new country.
population density
the average number of ppl living in an area usually given as km2 (squared).
natural decrease and how its calculated
change in natural population of a country or a place. calculated: death rate - birth rate which usually equals a negative number.
migration
the movement of ppl from one place to another
birth rate and how its calculated
the number of live births for a particular population over a period of time.
total live births/total population x 100
death rate (also mortality rate) and how its calculated
the number of deaths in a particular population during a particular period of time.
total deaths/total population x 100
actual increase
the rate at which the population is changing taking into consideration not only death/birth rates but also immigration/emigration (everything)
Demographic Transition Model
model showing how population changes over time.
