Population Change Definitions Flashcards
What does the birth rate of a population tell you?
The amount of babies born every year out of 1000 people in a population.
What does the death rate of a population tell you?
The amount of deaths every year out of 1000 people in a population.
What does natural increase mean?
Natural increase is the ratio between the birth rate and the death rate in a population. When there is a natural increase in a population, the birth rate is larger than the death rate, and vice versa for natural decrease.
What does the fertility rate of a population tell you?
The number of babies the average woman has in a particular population.
What does the infant mortality rate of a population tell you?
The average number of infants in a population who die before their first birthday per 1000 live births in a year.
What does the replacement rate of a population tell you?
The number of births per woman that are required to keep a population size equal over time.
What does sub-replacement rate mean?
A scenario where the size of a population is decreasing over time.
What does the life expectancy of a population tell you?
The number of years the average person in a population lives from birth to death.
What does an ageing population mean?
A scenario where the median age of a population increases, life expectancy increases, and the proportion of the population taken up by children gets smaller.
What does the total dependency rate of a population tell you?
The percentage of a population that is dependent; not working age.
What is an age-sex pyramid?
A graph that shows the relationship between gender/sex and age in a population.
What is the Demographic Transition Model (DTM)?
The DTM shows population change over time. It shows how birth rate and death rate affect the total population of a country. It shows marked differences between countries that are developing (LEDCs) and countries that are developed (MEDCs).
What is immigration?
The action of coming to live permanently in a foreign country.
What is emigration?
The action of leaving a country to live permanently in another.
What is net migration?
The difference between the amount of people immigrating to a country, state or region and the amount of people emigrating from a country, state or region.
